I am giving away a hardcover copy of Once Upon a Time: A Collection of Classic Fairy Tales by Once Upon a Time is an illustrated with a foreword written by the creators of the ABC television show, Once Upon a Time (returns Sunday, September 28 at 8|7c).
I always chuckle when a character mentions fairy tales on the ABC television show Scandal. It's usually in contrast to something bad that has happened. As if all fairy tales are nothing but happiness from start to finish. For example, check out the Scandal clip below where Olivia asks Jake how he got to her apartment after being held prisoner.
"This is not a fairy tale. This is not happily ever after. If you’re still alive, it’s because he still owns you, it’s because you’re still useful to him. And he’s going to find a way to use you against me." - Olivia Pope
I think that people forget that fairy tales are not all rainbows and kittens. A fair amount of scary stuff happens in many of them before the happily-ever-after ending. Season four of Scandal starts in ten days (Thursday, September 25, 2014 at 9|8c)! We won't know if Olivia gets her happily-ever-after (despite all of the craziness) for quite sometime. Until then, I'm adding Once Upon a Time: A Collection of Classic Fairy Tales Olivia's beach ereader. She could use a little fairy tale magic.

Here's the book's description:
“Once upon a time . . .”
Four simple words that, after more than two centuries, still have the ability to transport readers to lands of mystery, intrigue, and betrayal, life and death, love and abandon. Timeless are the tales of the Brothers Grimm who, in an effort to preserve native folklore, unwittingly crafted a cornerstone of Western literature.
With this book of fairy tales, beautifully illustrated by artist Kevin Tong, reacquaint yourself with the stories and characters you know and love. Run through the forest with Little Red Cap. Attend the ball with Cinderella. Eat an apple with Snow White. From witches to fairies, evil queens to kindly kings, frog princes and sleeping beauties, the Grimm tales are classics that are truly meant to be shared with young and old alike.
With a foreword written by the creators of ABC’s show Once Upon a Time, we see that these classic tales continue to endure and inspire more storytelling. The series brings some of these classic characters to life in a bold reimagination of the fairy tale world.
We invite you to reacquaint yourself with these magical stories and be transported once again with Once Upon a Time.

What Would Olivia Pope Read? #WWOPR
#WhereisOlivaPope? Olivia Pope and Jake Ballard agreed to run away together at the end of last season's Scandal. According to my math, Olivia and Jake are at a beach somewhere. They are drinking wine, eating popcorn, making out, and planning their next steps.
Olivia is always so busy. She doesn't get many chances to enjoy a little quiet time. I'd recommend that she get in some reading while hanging out at the beach.
I am counting down the days until Scandal's season four premiere by suggesting books for Olivia's beach ereader. They'll be books that a gladiator might enjoy. You know, based on stuff from the show.
Do you watch Scandal? Care to join me? What books would you suggest for Olivia's beach ereader? Check out my #WWOPR posts.

I've never watched Scandal, and I haven't really read that many retellings of fairy tells (I'm so far behind the times on this), but I've read hundreds, if not thousands of traditional fairy tales. I love so many of them. I do love Bluebeard. I can think of so many ways this could be rewritten.
ReplyDeleteI watch Scandal every week. Maybe Splintered?
ReplyDeleteI don't watch Scandal, but it's on my to-watch list! I love Robin McKinley's fairy tale retellings.
ReplyDeleteI never saw Scandal. But I really enjoyed Beastly :) I want to read the others as well.
ReplyDeleteOh, man, Scandal is one of my husband's and my favorite shows - we don't miss it. Honestly, right now I don't know which guy I want Olivia to end up with, but the president is ticking me off. He's just too wishy-washy! Olivia needs a true, take charge, Prince Charming. As for what to load on her e-reader, that's a good question. I think it would have to be any of the naughty re-tellings, but they better start of quickly with a good hook to catch her attention.
ReplyDeleteI have never seen Scandal but I love Beauty and The Beast
ReplyDeletehave not seen it I'm living with a person that does not like fantasy or syfy it's a pain because I love them.
