Dewey’s 24-Hour Read-a-thon: April 25, 2015 #dewey #rahrahreadathon

I will be away from home most of the day so I am only planning to read one book - Yes Chef: A Memoir by Marcus Samuelsson. I will read portions of it whenever I get a chance.

I am trying to step up my non-fiction reading for the summer. Not so sure it's a good idea to read a foodie memoir with snacks not being readily available...

Dewey’s 24-Hour Read-a-thon is an international reading challenge. For 24 hours, participants read books, post on their blogs (and/or social media accounts like Facebook, Twitter, Goodreads, etc.) about their reading, and visit other readers’ blogs. Participants also take part in mini-challenges throughout the day and win prizes. There are five ways you can participate: Reader, Cheerleader, Mini-Challenge Host, Organizer and Prize Donor.

Hey there Sleepy Heads! Big things are happening in Sleepy Hollow in the coming weeks.

1.  Mark your calendars!

Season two of Sleepy Hollow starts on Monday, September 22 at 9|8c. Oh how I have missed you Abbie Mills (Nicole Beharie)! *fist bump*

2. New to Sleepy Hollow? Want to reminisce? Check out very first episode on Hulu.

If you are new to Sleepy Hollow, don't fear. Folks in the US can watch the first three episodes for free on Hulu for a limited time.

Ichabod Crane awakens after 250 years and works to fulfill his mission in the modern world. He must help the police force track down the four headless horsemen of the Apocalypse. - Hulu

Sleepy Hollow Pilot | Season 1 Episode 1 | Aired on 09/16/2013 | TV-14 | 44:56

3. Enjoyed the pilot and want to see more? Missed an episode or two of the first season?

The entire first season is streaming now on Hulu Plus (paid subscription). If you are feeling lucky, enter to win a Full Free Year of Hulu Plus thanks to The Movie Network.

4. Do you like adaptations?

I am thinking about giving away a paperback copy of The Legend of Sleepy Hollow and Other Stories (Dover Thrift Editions) and a DVD copy of the movie adaptation Sleepy Hollow starring Johnny Depp and Christina Ricci (directed by Tim Burton) during Something Wicked Strikes in October. Sounds good, right?

 5. The Secret Journal of Ichabod Crane (Sleepy Hollow) by Alex Irvine releases tomorrow.
Book Description: “I am Ichabod Crane, born in the year 1747. It seems this is the year 2013 Anno Domini, and I have been given new life—how, I know not; why, I know not. I will discern the truth—if, that is, I can keep my head.”
In "Sleepy Hollow," a supernatural twist on Washington Irving's classic short story, Ichabod Crane has been pulled two-and-a-half centuries through time to find that he and detective Abbie Mills are humanity's last hope in the war against evil. Passionate, intelligent, and wryly funny, Crane has always used journals to collect thoughts and documents that may prove useful later, and The Secret Journal of Ichabod Crane offers an unprecedented look at the battle also raging inside his fascinating mind.
On the pages within, Crane shares new memories of the American Revolution; more amusing reflections on modern-day phenomena, from the Internet to Election Day; and private thoughts about Abbie, Katrina, and others. He also includes hidden case files; secret Freemason puzzles; selections from George Washington's mysterious Bible; and photos, letters, and drawings he has collected along the way. Filled with detail about past battles and vanquished monsters, as well as clues about those he and Abbie have yet to face, this journal is not just the ultimate repository for fans, but the key to Sleepy Hollow’s future—and the world’s.
Read excerpts from the book here.

6. No Justice! No Peace! Free Frank Irving!

Am I the only one still worried about Frank Irving being incarcerated? Captain Frank Irving (Orlando Jones), a police captain of the Westchester County Police, has been falsely accused of murder. With Abby and Ichabod knee-deep in troubles of their own, who's left to help Frank with his case? #Sleepyheads may have to take to Twitter again.

7. Sleepy Hollow: Children of the Revolution, a television show tie-in novel, by Keith R.A. DeCandido will be released on September 30, 2014.

Book Description: When Ichabod Crane, a soldier from the Colonial Army, is resurrected from his grave, more than two centuries after he was killed in battle, he partners with Lieutenant Abbie Mills of the Sleepy Hollow Police Department to fight the evil forces that have taken hold of the town.

It’s a cold day in January, and Ichabod visits Patriots Park for a moment of peace. Instead, he receives a disturbing vision from his wife, Katrina, in which she delivers a cryptic but urgent message: he must retrieve the Congressional Cross that he was awarded by the Second Continental Congress for bravery in action. There’s just one problem: Ichabod was killed before he ever received the medal, and he is unsure where it might be. Together Ichabod and Abbie set out to uncover the mystery of the cross and its connection to George Washington and his secret war against the demon hordes. They soon learn that a coven of witches is also seeking the cross in order to resurrect their leader, Serilda, who was burned at the stake during the Revolutionary War. Now they must locate the cross before the coven can bring back Serilda to exact her fatal revenge on Sleepy Hollow.

Read an excerpt from the book here.

8. Enter for a chance to win Sleepy Hollow: Children of the Revolution.

I will be giving away a copy of Sleepy Hollow: Children of the Revolution and a MP3 player during the 5th Annual Spooktacular Giveaway Hop. Why? Because I am cool like that. And because Audible.com has released a free Sleepy Hollow audiobook.

9. Download the free audiobook of Washington Irving's The Legend of Sleepy Hollow narrated by Tim Mison.

Tim Mison (who portrays Ichabod Crane on the hit Fox television series Sleepy Hollow - in case you didn't know) narrates this version of the classic short story. It's free via Audible!

Yes, there's an app for that. You can download a free Audible listening app for smartphones, tablets, computers, Kindles, and/or MP3 players.

No membership is required to download the audiobook.

10. Join the Sleepy Hollow Read Along!

Come one! Come all! I am hosting a Sleepy Hollow Read Along from October 17 - 24, 2014. It's conveniently scheduled to overlap with Dewey's 24 Hour Readathon and the Wonderfully Wicked Read-a-Thon. Sign up starts October 5.

#boutofbooks 11: Read-a-Thon Updates

Bout of Books 11 Wrap-Up

Last week I was crazy busy so I had to rely on audiobooks. I didn't meet my visitation goal, but I did meet my reading goal. I'll try to get around to visit some blogs this week.

What was the best book that you read during the read-a-thon?

Day 7

On Tuesday (August 26), I'll be hosting a book blast for FOR LOVE AND COUNTRY by Elizabeth D. Michaels. One of the entries in the book blast giveaway (prize: $50 Amazon Gift Card or Paypal Cash) is downloading the first book in The Horstberg Saga, Behind the Mask. It's free. I am going to get ahead of the game and download it to read today.

Day 6

Today I finished My Soul to Loose by Rachel Vincent, The Viscount and the Witch by Michael J. Sullivan, and The Secret Life of Walter Mitty by James Truber audiobooks. They are relatively short. I haven't seen the Ben Stiller movie adaptation of The Secret Life of Walter Mitty yet. Have you?

So that clears my list of free audiobooks. Now my list of free ebooks is a whole other story. SMH. Maybe I'll tackle them during my next read-a-thon.

Day 5

This morning, I decided that I am going to listen to the free audiobooks on my Kindle for the rest of the read-a-thon. I am not a free book hoarder. I don't care what my Kindle says ;-)

I finished Shark Tank Jump Start Your Business and Gabriel: Zero Point: The FREE Prequel Novella (Evan Gabriel Trilogy) today.

My reading is going well, my visiting five participants each day is not. I might have to do it after the read-a-thon.

I am coming to visit y'all, I promise.

Day 4

Still listening to Shark Tank Jump Start Your Business. I think that I'll do a series of posts about the show next month. I wonder when the new season starts.

Anywho...

Of course, things started to get crazy today. Life seems to find a way to disturb my reading plans, especially during scheduled times like a read-a-thon. I will not be kept down. LOL!

Day 3

Are you a fan of the television show Shark Tank? I don't watch the show consistently, but manage to catch a few episodes from time to time. The audiobook of Shark Tank Jump Start Your Business: How to Launch and Grow a Business from Concept to Cash by Michael Parrish DuDell is free on Amazon right now.

Day 2

I am kicking off the read-a-thon with an audiobook, Sixth Grave on the Edge: A Novel (Charley Davidson Book 6) by Darynda Jones. I won the book in a giveaway. I haven't read the first five books. I hope that I make it through okay. I am a fan of the narrator, Lorelei King.

Have you read any of the Charley Davidson sereies?

Day 1: Goals

This time around I am doing a  5 & 5. My goals for the read-a-thon:

  • Read five books
  • Visit five participants each day

I am going to wing it on this books. I'll pick up whatever calls to me.

~~~~~~~~~~
About Bout of Books: "The Bout of Books read-a-thon is organized by Amanda @ On a Book Bender and Kelly @ Reading the Paranormal. It is a week long read-a-thon that begins 12:01am Monday, August 18th and runs through Sunday, August 24th in whatever time zone you are in. Bout of Books is low-pressure, and the only reading competition is between you and your usual number of books read in a week. There are challenges, giveaways, and a grand prize, but all of these are completely optional." - Bout of Books team
I'm in the #Fraterfest Read-a-Thon. Are You? DAY 5
Caffeinated Book Reviewer
This is my start line for the Fraterfest Read-a-Thon (hosted by Caffeinated Book Reviewer). We'll be reading from the following: Rhiannon Frater books and/or books in one of these genres: paranormal, horror, mystery, suspense, zombie,vampire, shapeshifter, witch, dystopian, post-apocalyptic, ghost, etc.
My loose goals are to finish up the UNDEAD vampire series by MaryJanice Davidson, read Pretty When She Dies by Rhiannon Frater, participate in at least one challenge, and visit as many of the participants blogs as I can. I will be tweeting my progress using the official read-a-thon hashtag - #Fraterfest.
What are your plans?
October 7
I don't think that I will be able to visit other read-a-thon participants until Wednesday or Thursday. Real life is colliding with my reading life. Still reading though...
October 6
I finished Undead and Unsure. I finally found out what was going on with Jessica's babies. And it ended with an interesting twist. I still may stop reading the UNDEAD series with book 13.
I am starting on Zombie Bake-Off by Stephen Graham Jones. Have you read it?
How are you doing with your reading goals?
October 5
I am a little more than halfway through Undead and Unsure (#12) by MaryJanice Davidson. I think that I am over Betsy. The funny is starting to wear off of the flaky self-centered vampire queen. I may read one more UNDEAD novel and then I am going to walk away from this series. [I have similar feelings about the Stephanie Plum series.]
I checked out the other read-a-thon challenges. Seems like they are focused on books about witches.  I haven't read many books about witches. Must diversify. Must diversify.
I have decided to visit other read-a-thon participants on Monday.
October 4
Finally finished Undead and Underwater by MaryJanice Davidson. That book threw off my reading mojo big time. UGH! Usually, I am able to finish an UNDEAD audiobook in one or two days. I had been listening to Undead and Underwater since September 25. Fraterfest pushed me to finish it and move on. Thank goodness.
Now I am working on the Fraterfest Thirstbuster Challenge hosted by Chene at Mean Who You Are and listening to the audiobook of Undead and Unsure (#12) by MaryJanice Davidson.
What are you reading?
October 3
Right now, I am struggling through Undead and Underwater (#11.5) by MaryJanice Davidson. It is a book of three novellas. I am listening to the audiobook (and falling asleep).
I completed the Jigsaw Puzzle Challenge hosted by April at My Shelf Confessions.
Join the fun! Beat the Heat Readathon (includes wrap-up)
  • The Beat the Heat Readathon runs from July 29th through August 11th.
  • Sign up at Auntie Spinelli Reads or Phantasmic Reads.
  • There will be mini-challenges throughout the Readathon for participants, along with a grand prize giveaway at the end.
  • To be eligible for the grand prize giveaway, you must sign up by August 5th.
What to read? What to read? I am 7 books away from my 100 reading goal. I am too excited!!!
I am working on my readathon list tonight. I would like to polish off the last nine books during this challenge. However, I think that is wishful thinking when I add in the shows from Hulu's Summer Binge-A-Thon.
Now through August 11 is a lot of time. I just may surprise myself.
What are you going to read?
“Let’s do this!”
UPDATE:
The readathon has been extended to August 18. Read on people. Read on.
Starting Line
I am going to finish up with Adela Arthur and the Creator's Clock (The Chronicles of A, #1) by Judyann McCole. I am posting an author interview and book review on A. Literary Mafia.
_____________
I read NOS4A2 by Joe Hill by accident... it's a long story. This is officially my favorite horror book. SMH. I have never said that before. Review to come! I hope that someone makes a movie adaptation.
I read The Bird Savior because I have been on a dystopian kick since the Apocalypse Blog Hop. I am still confused by what I read, so I haven't posted a review yet. I kinda want to do a big year now. LOL!
I read How to Survive a Horror Movie by Seth Grahame-Smith in preparation for my Vamps vs. Zombies Month posts (August 17 - 31). I don't watch horror movies often. I might not be sleeping much in September.
I read Welcome to the Darkness by L.M. Justus as part of a Xpresso book tour. It happens to be a vampire story so it will count towards my Vamps vs. Zombie readings. I'll be posting an author interview and giveaway on August 23 on A. Literary Mafia.
I read Warm Bodies by Isaac Marion as part of Vamps vs. Zombies Month. Review on this blog coming soon!  Did you watch the movie adaptation?
I read All My Life by Rucy Ban (Contemporary, New Adult, Romance). I posted a giveaway and book review on A. Literary Mafia.
I read The Priest's Graveyard by Ted Dekker because I needed a book about a spiritual leader for The Seasonal Reading Challenge on Goodreads.
Last day! Today, I am listening to Underground by Kat Richardson and visiting other readathon participants. See you soon.
Finish Line
I made it! I made it! I reached my goal of reading 100 books in a year. *does crazy happy dance*
I usually slack up on my reading around September so I have been trying to read as much as possible before then.
