Dolen Perkins-Valdez reads from "Wench"
Dolen Perkins-Valdez reads from her novel, Wench: A Novel (P.S.). The scene is the first time that Drayle (slave owner) takes the main character, Lizzie (a then thirteen year-old slave). Perkins-Valdez is reading mostly from chapter 13.
Dolen Perkins-Valdez says that she learned of the Tawawa Resort while reading W. E. B. Du Bois, 1868-1919: Biography of a Race (Owl Books) by David Levering Lewis.
