While Torte (and murder) may be fictional in A Batter of Life and Death, the town of Ashland is very real and oh so charming. The plaza downtown is a hub for artists, foodies, musicians and travelers from every corner of the globe. Spend an afternoon strolling through Lithia Park with its meandering paths, gorgeous fountains, hiking trails, and ancient trees. Stop for a pint at Oberon’s Tavern or an afternoon sweet at Mix, and then wander up to the bricks to catch a spectacular live show.

One of my favorite things about writing the Bakeshop Mystery series is introducing readers to Ashland and the surrounding areas. I hope that readers will enjoy getting a little glimpse into the world of the theater, Shakespeare, a family bakeshop, and Southern Oregon.

Mike was looking at me, his eyes full of sympathy. “Look, J, I hate to say this but the choice is pretty simple.”

Leave it to my brother to come right out and say something like that. “Like what?”

Because that’s what Mike did. He told the truth whether you liked hearing it or not, and a small part of me worried that he was right. What I didn’t know was how I was ever going to find the courage to hop off the train before it crashed and left me in a million pieces.

Join Odyssey Adventure Club for a Summer Challenge and Movie Ticket Giveaway

Summer . . . a time that kids pine for during the school year and parents may anticipate with something akin to dread. Fearing refrains of “I’m bored” or hours spent on the couch playing video games can make moms and dads nervous about the long, hot months stretching before their family. Focus on the Family’s Odyssey Adventure Club offers an answer, encouraging parents and kids to embrace faith and fun with the Take the Plunge Adventures in Odyssey Clubhouse magazine’s Summer Challenge.

Take the Plunge

The Take the Plunge challenge features:

Master Mind Monday — commit God’s Word to memory
Ways to Play Wednesday — spend active time with your family
Faith Sharing Friday — share God’s love with others

The Take the Plunge challenge helps families memorize at least five verses, engage in five activities together and share their faith with five people before the school doors swing open again. Those who sign up will receive an 11-week plan with suggested verses to memorize, activity ideas (such as visiting a war memorial) and ways to witness (such as passing out popsicles at the park with an invitation to your church), making this challenge the perfect tool for parents who want summer to be a time of spiritual and social stimulation for their kids.

"Research tells us that the more senses we involve when teaching children a principle, the more likely it is to stick,” Plugged In editor and Adventures in Odyssey podcast host Bob Smithouser says. “Bible memorization by itself is great, but it becomes even more powerful when put into action. Know it. Share it. Live it.”

Families who sign up to take part in the challenge at www.whitsend.org/summer will have access to weekly verses to memorize, ideas for family fun and suggestions for service projects that allow a family to share their faith. Additionally, anyone who signs up to participate in the Take the Plunge challenge will receive a free scene from the latest Adventures in Odyssey album, as well as a free story from the book Strange Journey Back.

“You’ve had enough, huh?” I spin on the spot and lunge a forward thrust at his stomach.

With a furtive jab, Talon blocks my advance, and I don’t miss the fact that he makes none in return. That doesn’t stop me. I’m too in-the-moment, brimming with adrenaline.

“It’ll be dark in a few hours,” he says, seeming fixed on blocking only. “We’ll go into the city to sleep.”

I laugh and make for his shoulder to get him in an arm lock. “Who needs sleep?”

Before I know what’s happening, my arm is restrained. I’m thrown into the air like a dirty rug and land on my back. Talon kneels across me, pinning my arms on either side of my head.

He studies me, panting. The rims of his eyes tighten and then relax.

“You especially need to rest so you don’t wear yourself out before tomorrow.”

I’m too caught up in his glance to realize he was taking me seriously. We just stare at each other for a long moment. My breath locks in my throat.

A day’s growth stubbles along his chin, and my palms itch to reach out, to feel it. Heat emanates from him in waves, making me dizzy.

I swallow, waiting for him to act—as I can’t really move. With my hands fettered in his, I’m completely open to him. He has to be feeling the same. This invisible lure between us. How else can he look at me with such softness in his eyes?

Too soon he releases his hold and allows me to sit up.

I leapt back and flattened myself against the wall just as Seth knocked on my window. “Ellie, c’mon, I know you’re in there. I also know you have a weakness for ice cream. Come hang out with me and we’ll go to Dairy Queen. My treat.”

My mouth watered at the thought of a Heath Blizzard and I nearly opened my window. Except... How did he know about my ice cream addiction?

“At least tell me you found my note.”

Note? What note?

Seth sighed and then, as if reading my thoughts, said, “Look at the high scores on Skateboard Pro 2000.”

Of course I checked. How could I not? I was admittedly relieved when I saw my score still at the top of the list, but the next score was only one point below it and the following eight each one point lower than the next. As baffled by the impossibility of the scores as I was, I was even more surprised by the names claiming them—or words, rather. The top ten names on the high score list now read:

I blinked. Then I read the message again. Then I had to sit down. It was the nicest thing anyone had ever said to me, and definitely the closest thing to a romantic gesture I’d ever received.
