2012 Banned Books Week Proclamation

WHEREAS, the freedom to read is essential to our democracy, and reading is among our greatest freedoms; and

WHEREAS, privacy is essential to the exercise of that freedom, and the right to privacy is the right to open inquiry without having the subject of one's interest examined or scrutinized by others; and

WHEREAS, the freedom to read is protected by our Constitution; and

WHEREAS some individuals, groups, and public authorities work to remove or limit access to reading materials, to censor content in schools, to label "controversial" views, to distribute lists of "objectionable" books or authors, and to purge libraries of materials reflecting the diversity of society; and

WHEREAS, both governmental intimidation and the fear of censorship cause authors who seek to avoid controversy to practice self-censorship, thus limiting our access to new ideas; and

WHEREAS, every silencing of a heresy, every enforcement of an orthodoxy, diminishes the toughness and resilience of American society and leaves it less able to deal with controversy and difference; and

WHEREAS, Americans still favor free enterprise in ideas and expression, and can be trusted to exercise critical judgment, to recognize propaganda and misinformation, and to make their own decisions about what they read and believe, and to exercise the responsibilities that accompany this freedom; and

‘The Chaperone,’ by Laura Moriarty to be Optioned

The Chaperone is "a captivating novel about the woman who chaperoned an irreverent Louise Brooks to New York City in 1922, and the summer that would change them both." - Penguin.com

I listened to the audio version of The Chaperone, narrated by Elizabeth McGovern (RagtimeMasterpiece Classic: Downton Abbey) during my weekly walks. McGovern does a great job. I highly recommend it!

During an interview on CBS This Morning | Saturday [video above], Laura Moriarty revealed that Elizabeth McGovern has decided to option the film rights to The Chaperone. How exciting!

We may see a movie version in a few years. Who would you cast in the main roles for the movie?

Here's the description from the hardcover:

"In 1922, only a few years before she will become a famous silent-film star and an icon of her generation, a fifteen-year-old Louise Brooks leaves Wichita, Kansas, to study with the prestigious Denishawn School of Dancing in New York. Much to her annoyance, she is accompanied by a thirty-six-year-old chaperone. Cora Carlisle is neither mother nor friend, just a respectable neighbor whom Louise's parents have hired for propiety's sake. But upstandinding, tradional Cora has her own private reasons for making the trip."

"Of course Cora has no idea what she’s in for: young Louise, already stunningly beautiful and sporting her famous black bob, is known for her arrogance and her lack of respect for convention, and her keen inteligence. By the time their train pulls into Grand Central, Cora fears that supervising Louise will be at best exhausting and, at worst, impossible. Ultimately, the five weeks they spend together will be the most important of her life forever.

For Cora, New York holds the promise of discovery that might answer the question at the center of her being, and even as she does her best to watch over Louise in this strange and bustling place she embarks on  her own  mission. And while what she finds isn’t what she anticipated, she is liberated in a way she could not have imagined. Over the course of  the summer, Cora’s eyes are opened to the promise of the twentieth century and a new understanding of the possibilities for being fully alive."

    HOSTAGE (2005) - Movie Trailer

Earlier this week, I noticed that Hulu has a new movie category called films based on books.  The image of a salty Mr. Willis called to me from the list. So I have decided to start with Hostage.

Hostage is a 2005 movie thriller starring Bruce Willis and directed by Florent-Emilio Siri. The film is based on Hostage: A Novel by Robert Crais (adapted for film by Doug Richardson).

Although I am almost positive that I must have seen the movie when it came out, I cannot remember it. [Is that a bad sign?] So I am considering it "new to me."

I picked up the book today. Have you read it?

ALEX CROSS - Movie Trailer [starring Tyler Perry]

Check out the trailer for the upcoming movie Alex Cross (due for release on October 19, 2012).

Based on Cross by James Patterson (Alex Cross novel #12), the crime thriller stars Tyler Perry, Matthew Fox, and Rachel Nichols.

Today, Cross was re-released with the movie tie-in cover of Alex Cross (its name was changed to Alex Cross).

I must confesss: I HAVE NEVER READ A JAMES PATTERSON NOVEL.

So, I am not super excited about it. I blame the movies Kiss the Girls and Along Came a Spider. I couldn't get through them. The Silence Of The Lambs? Couldn't finish it. Not that they were bad ... at least the parts that I saw through my fingers.  Seven? Saw it. Liked it. Freaked me out.

I'm convinced that serial killer movies aren't for me. Curiously, television shows with serial killers don't bother me. Go figure.

I feel like I should read some Patterson books anyway. Does he have a good series that doesn't involve serial killers?

UPDATE (10/3/12): Goodreads has suckered me in with its book-movie cross-promotion. I signed up for the book giveaway and RSVP'd to the movie (showin' Tyler Perry some support). Who is  gonna hold my hand? SMH.

    UNCLE LOUIE [Book Review]

  • Author: Michael B. Druxman
  • Reading Level: Adult
  • Paperback: 150 pages
  • Publisher: CreateSpace (January 6, 2012)

  • “Are you kidding? Ray Charles could catch you.” - Louie Ginsberg, Uncle Louie: An Original Screenplay

    COVER DESCRIPTION

"If Damon Runyon had written The Karate Kid, it might've turned out like this, because Uncle Louie is an aging fugitive from Guys & Dolls.

When he comes to Los Angeles to live with the nephew that he hasn't seen in thirty years, he meets Andy, his grand nephew. Andy is a likable high school student who loves playing his guitar, but also has some problems. Inadvertently, the youth has incurred the wrath of a local drug dealer.

And, even though he has his own troubles with an East Coast Mafia chieftain plus the F.B.I., Louie takes it upon himself to help the boy find himself.

Michael B. Druxman's screenplay has action, laughs and also a few warm tears along the way."

    TWITTER-SIZE SUMMARY

    #3words2describe – warm, funny, family-oriented

    MY TAKE

Uncle Louie is an original screenplay by Michael B. Druxman. The main character, Louie Ginsberg (aka Uncle Louie), has spent his life running with the rough crowd (picture an aging lower-level henchman/gangster type). When he "retires" and moves to Los Angeles to live with his nephew and his family, Louie brings a secret trail of drama with him - in the form of mafia threats and F.B.I. agents.

As Louie tries to blend into the family and resolve his drama, he notices that Andy (his grand nephew) is slipping into a dangerous situation with a local drug dealer. Wise to shady dealings and fast business, Uncle Louie uses his street smarts to help Andy in more ways than Andy and his parents could have ever imagined. After the initital set-up, I found the storyline to be predictable (but still entertaining). So much so, at certain points in the story, I thought that I had already seen the actual movie.

What I found more interesting than the storyline and dialogue was the actual detail that went into setting up the background parts of the story (descriptions of characters and scenes). Sometimes I watch movies and think that I could have done a better job writing lines, casting characters or crafting scenes. After reading Uncle Louie, I see that it's a lot harder than it looks from the outside.

Druxman says, "Uncle Louie is what Hollywood calls a "soft movie," one that emphasizes leisurely character development over a fast-paced action-filled storyline. These kinds of stories are usually a hard sell to studio heads because they seldom make a lot of money, but I do enjoy writing them."

While I don't see Uncle Louie being made into a summer blockbuster movie, I could see it being made into a family television movie. It's a feel-good flick with a good message. It demonsrates that friends and family are powerful influences in a young person's life. Good kids can make bad decisions that have irrevocable consequences - even when parents are actively involved in their lives. It's important to have all hands on deck - so to speak - to help keep them on the right path.

    Recommended for:
    • Movie buffs
    • Fans of "Runyonesque-type" stories

NOTE: I received a free copy of Uncle Louie through a Goodreads First Reads giveaway.

I don't see Eddie Murphy working as Uncle Louie in a more modern adaptation of the movie as Druxman suggests. Check out my casting lineup on my Uncle Louie Pinterest board. Who would you cast in the main roles for the movie?
